Meta & Google Vs Canadian Media
In this week CBC News Network (July, 9th, 2023) The Conversation, we discuss the ongoing battle between Meta, Google and Bill C-18. What are your thoughts? Here are mine.
What is the bill:
“Canada recently passed a law (Bill C-18) that would require Google and Meta to pay news media businesses for the content used. It is similar to the News Media Bargaining Code (NMBC) passed by the Australian Parliament in February 2021. The NMBC’s objective was to address the massive imbalance in bargaining power between Australia’s news media businesses and the platforms. It required the parties to negotiate and, failing agreement being reached, arbitration would settle the appropriate payment.” ~Rod Sims @Toronto Star
What is the problem?
“Google said Thursday it will remove Canadian news content from its search, news and discover products after a new law meant to compensate media outlets comes into force.
The move to pull news from the world's most popular search engine could have a devastating impact on Canadian media outlets, which often depend on third parties like Google to get content into the hands of readers.”~John Paul Tasker, CBC News
